Mechanisms regulating retinal circuit organization and maintenance

Research in the Hoon lab employs a multi-faceted toolkit combining murine transgenic approaches with high resolution light and 3D electron microscopy, molecular biology, transcriptomic and electrophysiology techniques. The objective of our lab’s research is to determine the molecular, cellular and activity-dependent mechanisms that regulate the formation, maturation, function and maintenance of neural circuits in the mammalian retina. Our research also aims to reveal how alterations (and breakdown) of circuit assembly mechanisms degrades neural integrity and functional responses in retinal diseases. Understanding the mechanistic basis of retinal circuit dysfunction can enable formulation of novel therapeutic approaches to restore circuit function during retinal degeneration and disease conditions.
